Bill O'Connell Latin Jazz Project

BILL O’CONNELL has played and recorded with Gato Barbieri, Dave Valentin, Mongo Santamaria, Conrad Herweg, Kenney Rankin and others. He plays in New York area clubs, and at jazz festivals around the world, including Montreau, and the Canary Islands (where the title Black Sand comes from--the black sand beaches). His forte is latin jazz and many of his compositions are on CDs by flutist Dave Valentin and Gato Barbieri.

A major presence in today’s jazz scene, two-time Grammy award winner RANDY BRECKER plays on two tracks (2 & 6) Of this CD.

DAVE VALENTIN plays on track 3, Blue Brazil. He is a veteran latin jazz musician, with many recording credits and has a large fan base among latinos in the New York area.

Bassist ANDY GONZALEZ appears on 7 tracks and is a veteran latin jazz musician with numerous credits, having layed with contemporary musicians and also with latin jazz masters such as Tito Puente, Machito and Chico O’Farrell.
Conguero and vocalist MILTON CARDONA’s most recent CD as a leader is Cambucha on the Justin Time label. He plays congas and shekere on several tracks and on track 4, Obakaso, he sings an Afro-Cuban chant.

Drummer STEVE BERRIOS most recently recorded as a leader on the Fantasy/Milestone CD, And Then Some, in 1996.Bassist

CHARLES FAMBROUGH, who plays on 4 tracks has six CDs to his credit as a band leader. He is in demand as a session sideman and in the New York jazz club.

Sax player JOE FORD is part of Jerry Gonzalez’s Fort Apache band and has played and recorded extensively.

O’Connell, Gonzalez, Ford and Berrios often work with trumpet player and percussionist Jerry Gonzalez as the Fort Apache band.
